Minimum Age:
Participants must be at least 18 years old.
IWA | COSS Competence:
Delegates must meet the Personal Track Safety (PTS) competence entry requirements. Learners must also be competent in IWA or COSS competence.
Literacy Standards:
A good level of literacy to Meet Entry Qualifications
Sentinel Track Safety Card:
Participants must hold a valid Sentinel Track Safety Card and comply with the requirements of NR/L2/CTM/021 – Competence and Training in Track Safety.
Medical Fitness:
Participants must meet the medical requirements outlined in Network Rail Standard NR/L2/OHS/00124 (Competence Specific Fitness Medical Requirements).
Drug and Alcohol Standards:
Compliance with Network Rail Specification NR/L1/OHS/051 (Drugs & Alcohol)
is mandatory.
Course Aim:
The Protection Controller (PC) course is designed to equip delegates with the essential knowledge and practical skills necessary to competently undertake Protection Controller duties on Network Rail infrastructure. This training ensures delegates understand their responsibilities in setting up, managing, and handing back line blockages effectively and safely, maintaining clear communication and safety protocols throughout.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, delegates will be able to:
Clearly define and execute the responsibilities of a Protection Controller as detailed in Network Rail's Rule Book (Handbook 8).
Understand and apply Network Rail’s Lifesaving Rules and safety values in the context of Protection Controller duties.
Demonstrate safety leadership, emphasising duty-of-care and effective management of safety-critical tasks.
Effectively plan and implement line blockage procedures, maintaining robust communication with Signallers, Controllers of Site Safety (COSS), and Individual Working Alone (IWA).
Conduct comprehensive briefings to COSS and IWA personnel, ensuring clear communication and understanding of safety arrangements.
Accurately perform Protection Controller shift handovers, identifying and mitigating associated risks.
Manage processes for suspending, resuming, and giving up line blocks efficiently and safely.
Assessment Criteria:

Knowledge Assessment:
A controlled written examination consisting of scenario-based questions. Delegates must achieve a minimum score of 42 out of 47 correct responses to pass.
Practical Assessment:
A scenario-based evaluation requiring delegates to demonstrate proficiency in managing a simulated line blockage, including correctly completing essential documentation and procedures.
Course Delivery:
This intensive one-day course combines classroom instruction, engaging visual presentations, interactive discussions, and scenario-based practical exercises. Training is delivered by Network Rail-approved trainers and includes comprehensive engagement with realistic operational scenarios, supporting effective learning outcomes.
Duration: The PC Initial | recertification is through workplace assessment

Yes as part of both the initial and recertification course we conduct a practical assessment at our training centre at Pontyclun. The practical will require all learners to bring full PPE.
Yes it is a mandatory requirement that all learners can demonstrate the practical operation of a set of Points | Clips + Scotches.
