COURSE INFORMATION

Points Operator - Prerequisites

  • Minimum Age:

    Participants must be at least 18 years old.

  • IWA | COSS Competence:

    Delegates must meet the Personal Track Safety (PTS) competence entry requirements. Learners must also be competent in IWA or COSS competence.

  • Literacy Standards:

    A good level of literacy to Meet Entry Qualifications

  • Sentinel Track Safety Card:

    Participants must hold a valid Sentinel Track Safety Card and comply with the requirements of NR/L2/CTM/021 – Competence and Training in Track Safety.

  • Medical Fitness:

    Participants must meet the medical requirements outlined in Network Rail Standard NR/L2/OHS/00124 (Competence Specific Fitness Medical Requirements).

  • Drug and Alcohol Standards:

    Compliance with Network Rail Specification NR/L1/OHS/051 (Drugs & Alcohol)

    is mandatory.

Points Operator - Overview

  • Course Aim:
    The Auxiliary Operating Duties (AOD) Points Operator course is designed to equip delegates with the essential skills and knowledge required to effectively perform the duties of a Points Operator on Network Rail infrastructure. This training specifically addresses the ability to handle point failures, both simple and complex, and the manual operation of power-operated points, ensuring delegates are fully prepared for real-world railway operational scenarios.

  • Course Objectives:

    By the conclusion of this course, delegates will be able to:

    • Clearly understand and undertake the specific roles and responsibilities of a Points Operator.

    • Accurately identify different types of point motors commonly used on the rail network.

    • Recognise and utilise essential equipment required for the safe and effective manual operation of points.

    • Differentiate and respond appropriately to simple and complex points failures.

    • Execute the correct procedures for manually operating power-operated points in accordance with Network Rail's rules and regulations (GE/RT8000 Series).

  • Assessment Criteria:

    Delegates' understanding and capability are assessed through:

    • Practical Assessment:

      A practical session where each delegate must demonstrate their proficiency in manually operating points safely and correctly, handling point failures, and using the required equipment.

    • Knowledge Assessment:

      A formal written assessment consisting of 12 questions with a total of 17 responses required. Delegates must achieve a minimum score of 14 correct answers to pass. Re-assessment opportunities are available if initial pass criteria are not met.

  • Course Delivery:
    This comprehensive one-day course combines classroom instruction using visual aids and practical trackside sessions to deliver a robust learning experience. Delivered by Network Rail-approved trainers with extensive occupational competence, the training environment is designed to simulate real operational conditions safely, utilising sidings, slow lines, or approved training tracks.

Question 1: Do I need PPE for the practical?

Yes as part of both the initial and recertification course we conduct a practical assessment at our training centre at Pontyclun. The practical will require all learners to bring full PPE.

Question 2: Do we have to do a practical?

Yes it is a mandatory requirement that all learners can demonstrate the practical operation of a set of Points | Clips + Scotches.
